What does “Montessori” mean?

At it’s core, Montessori is an educational philosophy developed by Maria Montessori based on one idea:

Learning happens best when the environment is intentionally designed to let the learner explore, choose, and develop at their own pace.

The core principles are:

Prepared environment — The environment is carefully designed to encourage learning rather than simply entertain.
Freedom within limits — Individuals have meaningful choices, but within safe, thoughtfully, structured boundaries.
Self-directed learning — Curiosity drives learning more than external rewards or punishment.
Hands-on exploration — Learning comes from interacting with the world, not passive instruction.
Respect for the learner —The teacher guides rather than controls.
Mixed-age communities — Learners benefit from observing and interacting with others at different stages of development.
Independence and confidence — The goal isn’t obedience; it’s creating capable, thoughtful individuals.

At ChirpDog, we do almost all of that for dogs.

Prepared environment: We don’t just supervise dogs. We intentionally design enrichment, rest, adventures, vocabulary opportunities, and problem-solving scenarios.

Freedom within limits: We don’t use tools to force a dog to comply. We let dogs choose when to interact, when to rest, how to solve problems, when to communicate, and how to explore. We just add structure.

Self-directed learning: We don’t just ask for sit and stay. We ask how to create an environment where a dog discovers the benefit of a sit and stay on their own.

Hands-on exploration: We let dogs be dogs and safely explore the environment and its features at their own pace.

Respect for the learner: We take this one to heart. Different personalities, different histories, different dogs. Differences matter. Preferences matter. Emotions matter.

Mixed-age communities: We are obsessed with consistent daycare groups. We create a learning community where dogs build relationships, observe each other, practice communication, and develop emotionally.

Independence and confidence: We have a purpose, not a plan. The goal isn’t obedience; it’s creating capable, thoughtful individuals.

Not because of toys.

Not because of puzzles.

Because ChirpDog is built around designing an environment that allows dogs to become more capable, more communicative, and more independent over time.

This is a textbook Montessori philosophy applied to dog training.
