Wait.

Montessori, for dogs?

Yeah, kinda. Not tiny desks and wooden toys, or people pretending dogs are children.

ChirpDog is borrowing a philosophy of learning built around independence, thought, choice, exploration, and respect for the learner.

What does “Montessori” actually mean?

At its core, Montessori is an educational philosophy developed by Maria Montessori based on one idea:

Learning happens best when the environment is intentionally designed to let the learner explore, choose, and develop at their own pace.

The principles are:

At ChirpDog, we do that for dogs.

  • Prepared environment:

We design the day instead of scripting it. Enrichment, social groups, adventures, and everyday environments are used naturally as opportunities for communication, problem solving, and discovery.

  • Freedom within limits:

We don’t use tools to force a dog to comply. We let dogs choose where they interact, when they rest, and how they explore. We add structure to help them communicate with the world around them.

  • Hands-on exploration:

We let dogs be dogs and safely explore the environment and its features at their own pace. They can have a purpose without a plan.

  • Self-directed learning:

We don’t just teach things like recall, patience, and release cues. We create scenarios where dogs discover why those skills are useful to them.

  • Respect for the learner:

We take this one to heart. Different personalities, different histories, different dogs. Differences matter. Preferences matter. Emotions matter. We guide each dog with these things in mind.

  • Mixed-age communities:

We are obsessed with consistent social groups. Dogs build real relationships, learn one another’s communication, observe dogs at different stages of development, and gain social experience over time.

  • Independence and capability:

The goal isn’t just obedience. It’s capability. A capable dog is easier to teach, easier to guide, more confident navigating the world, and better able to communicate when they need help.

ChirpDog is built around designing an environment that allows dogs to become more capable, more communicative, and more independent over time. Montessori principles, thoughtfully reimagined for dog training.
